Homeboy Industries is proud to announce that its Founder, Father Gregory Boyle, S.J., received The Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. in a White House ceremony that took place on Friday, May 3rd. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the United States’ highest civilian honor. “This recognition is heartening because it honors the many thousands of men and women who have walked through our doors at Homeboy Industries since 1988,” said Father Gregory Boyle.

Each year over 10,000 former gang members from across Los Angeles come through Homeboy Industries’ doors in an effort to make a positive change in their lives. They are welcomed into a community of mutual kinship, love, and a wide variety of services ranging from tattoo removal and anger management to parenting classes.

Currently, employment is offered for more than 180 men and women through a thoughtful, strategic, 18-month program that focuses on healing just as much as it focuses on developing work readiness skills. Its overarching goal is to see individuals heal from trauma, allowing them to contribute fully to their family and community. The five key outcomes the organization strives for are: 1) Reduce recidivism; 2) Reduce substance abuse; 3) Improve social connectedness; 4) Improve housing safety and stability; and 5) Reunify families.

In the last six years Homeboy Industries has created a broader and deeper bench in its senior management team and more than doubled its revenue from approximately $18 million to $46 million. The new Vice President, Human Resources will be joining CEO, Tom Vozzo, and a strong C suite of executives including a Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Program Officer and a Chief of Research, Evaluation, and Strategy and four Vice Presidents.

The CEO is seeking a Human Resources executive who will bring a strategic approach to all aspects of the human resources functions while building a robust, high-performing team. The Vice President, Human Resources will serve on a leadership team that prioritizes people and within a culture that fulfills its mission by hiring their ‘Homies’ into positions of greater responsibility.  This is a highly visible role within an organization that has world-class brand recognition and a stellar national reputation. POSITION DESCRIPTION 

Role and Responsibilities:

The VP, HR is responsible for developing, directing, and overseeing the Homeboy Industries’ HR strategic initiatives in ways that support the full life cycle of the employee experience, the agency’s mission, and the overall success of the organization. Responsible for setting, enforcing, and evaluating legally compliant human resources policies, procedures, and best practices, and identifying and implementing long-range strategic talent management goals and DEI practices. The ideal candidate will have diverse experience in for- profit and nonprofit organizations. This position requires expert knowledge of Human Resources and the ability to develop and support critical capabilities that align with the organization’s priorities as well as maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the industry’s best employment practices.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Supports management by providing human resources direction, advice, and counsel

  • Consults with senior management and function leaders on needs pertaining to the development of the organization and offers expert advice and guidance to assist with organizational learning and employment-related topics

  • Collaborates with senior management to define the organization's long-term mission, vision and goals; identifies ways to support the mission through talent acquisition/management

  • Designs and implements leadership and management development programs

  • Develops training path for key positions in the company, work with managers to establish individual development plans consistent with current job duties and career advancement

  • Plans, organizes and leads company-wide employee training programs

  • Advises and coaches leadership on how to manage complex/sensitive employee performance matters through early intervention and appropriate corrective action

  • Leads company’s compliance with all existing governmental and labor legal requirements including any related to the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Department of Labor, worker compensation, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

  • Provides direction and support on employee relations issues to ensure consistency in the application of policies, procedures, and Employee Relation best practices.

  • Initiates a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) program to shape and deliver experiences, programs and results for our employees to create and translate our strategy and culture providing impactful business results.

  • Responsible for benefit administration, which includes all health plans and 401k plans. Collaborate with insurance brokers to ensure the most cost-effective and competitive benefit plans are selected.

  • Manages other areas such as employee communication, employee safety and health

  • Partners with internal stakeholders to build and deliver learning and development strategies and programming that enable managers to have a talent-first mindset, ensure strong succession plans, and create a pipeline of talented future leaders.

  • Leads the HR function to be a strategic partner to the business, advancing organizational initiatives and overall performance

  • Sets the tone for HR to support the organization in delivering the mission/vision and modeling core values

  • Builds a scalable HR infrastructure that is able to address Company growth and changes in business needs; includes hiring and developing experienced HR talent in alignment with the operating model

  • Coaches, mentors and interacts with direct reports, the HR team, and all levels of the organization to foster growth, encourage development, and support organizational performance

  • Ensures all employment, benefits and pay practices are applied equitably; directs and oversees auditing and review practices, and takes action to address gaps in a timely manner

  • Ensures that HR practices are aligned with organization objectives.

Job qualifications:

  • 15+ years of career experience with 10+ years in an HR leadership role

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required

  • SPHR or SHRM-SCP strongly preferred

  • Experience working in non-profit, for profit environment preferred

  • High emotional intelligence, someone who is straight-forward, transparent, and self-motivated

  • Strong managerial and coaching skills, with the ability to provide direct feedback and coach and develop leaders to become more effective in their roles

  • Possesses unquestionable personal integrity, fairness, and inclusivity

  • Performance-driven leader with outstanding communication skills, ability to influence peers and leaders cross the company to drive the right outcomes, strong and proven influencing skills

  • Progressive HR experience with key experience in developing people strategies.

  • Selects, negotiates, and administers all benefits programs including the Company’s 401K plan.

  • Experience designing and managing all core HR processes including those related to compensation and Benefits, performance management, and HR Compliance.

  • Manages all annual and periodic “clock-driven” employment processes including annual benefits renewals, performance evaluation cycles, Compensation

  • In-depth knowledge of all aspects of HR management

  • Ability to manage a diverse and demanding workload

  • Strong administrative and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work independently, set priorities, and handle multiple tasks with a high level of efficiency.

  • Ability to work in a shared office with a fast-paced environment and frequent interruptions.

Compensation:

A salary range of $140,000 - $175,000, plus a comprehensive benefits package.
